It is a double tube highway tunnel (2x2) constructed by New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).
Cross sectional area of the tunnel is 67 m². Maximum and minimum excavation areas are 116 m² and 91 m² respectively.
Total length of the tunnel is 5228 m.
The tunnel was built as an alternative to Cankurtaran Pass and accelerates the connection between the Black Sea Region and the Eastern Anatolia Region. It is located in the alignment of the Hopa-Artvin highway where winter conditions are particularly challenging. Completion of the tunnel has shortened the route by 12 km.
