The objective of the project is to meet the long-term clean water and domestic water demand of the city of Ankara. The project involves the transfer of water from Gerede Creek to the Camlidere Dam Reservuar with the help of a regulator and a 31.50 km long water tunnel with an interior diameter of 4.5 m.
Gerede Tunnel has a capacity of transferring 40 m² of water/sec and will transfer 94% of the water, bringing 225 million m² of water from the Gerede catchment basin to Ankara. It is foreseen that through this project Ankara’s water demand up to 2050 will be met.
