Cable-stayed suspension bridge
Total length 660 m, main span 380 m
Height: 168.5 m
The second Komurhan Bridge built in 1986 did not lend itself to a divided road geometry and did not meet earthquake regulations. It was therefore decided in 2010 that a 3rd Generation Komurhan Bridge should be constructed.
Komurhan Bridge located at km 51 of the Elazig-Malatya highway at the point where the highway meets the river Euphrates, is the only river crossing in this section of the Euphrates. The bridge is situated on the shorthest alignment between Malatya and Elazig and has therefore no alternative. For this reason it is the most important structure in the region.
The total length of this 168.5 m tall cable-stayed bridge is 660 m, it’s widest span 380 m.
The system of Komurhan Bridge differs from typical cable-stayed bridges in that it has a single pylon and single span. The cables connect to the bridge deck in the middle of the bridge on a single plane. The 21 cables that support the 380 m long main span are stabilised with the same number of cables anchored onto the 180 m long foundation block on the land side.
The elements that determined the concept of Komurhan Bridge are the structure of the land, the road alignment and the requirement that traffic should not be disrupted during the construction. For this reason the new bridge was placed to the South of the old bridge and the elevation of it’s deck was raised by 10 m.
