The “Railway Bosphorus Tube Crossing (Marmaray) Project” was planned as an uninterrupted and modern metro transport system which connects the Asian and European sides of Istanbul. It involves the improvement of the existing commuter lines and the construction of a tube tunnel under the Bosphorus. With it’s depth of 58 m it is the deepest immersed tube tunnel in the world. The immersed tube forms a 1,400 m part of this 76.6 km long rail line.
The project involves the addition of a new line to the existing 2 commuter lines on the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, rehabilitation of the entire infrastructure, stations and electro-mechanical systems, and with the already procured new rolling stock the provision of a modern rail transport system.
One of the three rail lines serves Intercity passenger trains and freight trains, the other two lines are used by commuter trains.
Marmaray which lies in the international transport corridor and is integrated with the Ankara-Istanbul project and other high speed train projects, also forms an important link in the uninterrupted railway connection between London and Peking.

Historical remains unearthed during the construction of Marmaray revealed that Istanbul’s past history dates back 8500 years. During the archaeological excavations 13 shipwrecks were discovered and 35,000 historical artefacts found.
