116 km long motorway
2900 x 2 double tube tunnel
In 1987 it was decided to construct a motorway between Gumusdere and Gerede, which is a route that suffers from heavy traffic at any time and is particularly difficult to cross during the winter months. The 26 km long Bolu Mountain Crossing was determined as the key point of the alignment.
The tunnel area is located inside a first degree earthquake zone with seismic faults passing beneath it. The area suffered 2 strong earthquakes during this time. However, in spite of all these adversities the project was completed successfully.
The Gumusova-Gerede section of the Anatolian Motorway that connects Europe and Asia, consists of 116 km long motorway and 6.3 km long connection roads. The project was divided into 5 sections, the 90 km long 4 sections of which were commissioned at various dates between 1992 and 1996.
The section of the Bolu Mountain Crossing which involves 4 viaducts with a total length of 2 x 4,650m and a double tube bored tunnel of 2 x 2,900m was opened to traffic in 2007.
